Onze anos depois de “sangrar” no palco do MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) e dez anos após o famoso vestido de carne, Lady Gaga foi mais uma vez protagonista da premiação, que aconteceu na noite deste domingo, 30. A cantora levou para casa cinco prêmios, incluindo a de artista do ano, e chamou atenção para as máscaras originais que usou em cada uma de suas aparições ao longo de uma noite que teve distanciamento social, e também contou com apresentação de Miley Cyrus e presença de Ariana Grande em duo com Gaga.
O VMA 2020 foi o primeiro grande evento a acontecer desde o surgimento da pandemia do novo coronavírus. A cerimônia realizada em Nova York teve discursos de aceitação e parte das performances pré-gravadas para diminuir os riscos de contaminação. O evento foi realizado em diferentes bairros de Nova York, como Manhattan, Brooklyn ou Bronx, para apresentações ao vivo ao ar livre, embora quase sem público presente.
Gaga foi eleita a artista do ano, e ganhou três prêmios por “Rain on Me”, música que gravou com Ariana Grande para o seu mais recente álbum, Chromatica. O single levou para casa os prêmios de melhor colaboração, música do ano e melhor fotografia. Apesar de ter ganhado tantos prêmios, o maior da noite ficou com o rapper The Weeknd, que ganhou como melhor vídeo do ano, por “Blinding Lights”, que também lhe rendeu o prêmio de melhor vídeo de R&B.
O canadense, porém, mostrou uma postura muito séria ao receber os prêmios, e refletiu a onda de protestos que está sendo vivida nos Estados Unidos por injustiça racial. “Mais uma vez, é difícil comemorar. Justiça para Jacob Blake e Breonna Taylor”, disse ele nas duas vezes que saiu para receber o prêmio, referindo-se a duas das mortes de afro-americanos nas mãos de policiais que abalaram a sociedade americana neste ano.
Além de um medley de Lady Gaga, que cantou com Ariana Grande, a cerimônia teve apresentação de The Weeknd, o grupo de K-pop BTS e a boyband latina CNCO. A cantora Miley Cyrus reviveu o clipe de ‘Wrecking Ball’ dançando em cima de um globo de luz.
